A lady of letters

Wonderful news has reached us that Eddi is soon to receive her fourth honorary doctorate in music, this time from Edinburgh University.

“I think I’m getting it in January and I am over the moon! The capital of my glorious, wonderful country!” she exclaimed.

What was the young Eddi like at school? “I was rubbish to all, except my form teacher Ms Smith who adored me and still does” she recalls. “She battled with the head of my year who argued with her that she was doing me a disservice encouraging my musical aspirations”.

What were your best subjects? “Art and staring out of the window. French too, and sewing – fashion and fabrics”.

What might you have gone on to university to study had things been different? “I would have liked to have gone to Glasgow School of Art and swooned at all the boys… maybe got them to strip for life study work! Newly arrived in Irvine, Ayrshire from Glasgow, I started sorting out a portfolio when I was in fifth year. The Irvine art teachers liked my work. They pushed for me to head for art college but I remembered NOTHING of art history and found it a chore. You needed that and English and both bored the socks off me at the time. Youth’s wasted on the young!”.
